5-inch vs. 6-inch gutters: which does my home need?

5-inch K-style gutters are standard on many homes. 6-inch gutters carry noticeably more water and are a better fit for large or steep roofs, long roof runs, and valleys that funnel water into one spot. If your gutters overflow in heavy rain even when they’re clean, they may be undersized — we size them to your roof, not a default.

If you’re cleaning your gutters more than once or twice a year — or paying someone to — guards usually pay for themselves. They matter most in neighborhoods with mature trees. If your home has few trees nearby, you may not need them, and we’ll tell you.

It depends on the roof area draining into each gutter run, the roof’s pitch, and the gutter and downspout size. Long runs with only one downspout are a common cause of overflow. We calculate it for your roof — and 3×4 downspouts move considerably more water than smaller ones.
