If a roof replacement project is in the near future for you, there are a few things to consider before hand.

Like one of them being, what kind of substrate does your roof have underneath your shingles.

Most times it’s plywood, OSB or even wood shingles sitting on horizontal slats.

Plywood or OSB is the ideal option for shingles to be installed on but we want to make sure that plywood or OSB is in good conditions.

Many times it can be damaged by water intrusion wether it was caused by heavy rains or ice dams in the winter.

Most times bad substrate plywood or OSB can be detected from attic other times not until the shingles get stripped off along with underlayment completely exposing the material present and it’s current conditions.

Having a solid substrate is critical to the roofing installation being that the substrate is what’s going to hold everything down and prevent it from flying off.

The good thing about plywood or OSB is that it can be replaced as needed. So if you only have 3-4 bad sheets out of entire roof surface that is all you have to replace.

Do you know what type of substrate is on your roof ? Now you know why it’s needed and how it affects the rest of your project.
