1. Get Recommendations from Friends or Family
- It’s always best to start by asking your friends and family for recommendations.
- If your friends and family don’t have any recommendations, then you’ll want to head over to Google.
- Before you do a search on Google be sure to read through Tip #2.
2. Choose a Local Roofing Contractor
- Unfortunately there are numerous roofers that may show up at your door after a major storm to try to get a quick roof repair job out of you.
- Sadly, these guys typically disappear once their project is done, never to be heard from again.
- This is problematic in the event something goes wrong down the line and you have no way of contacting these out-of-town roofers. We call these “storm-chasers” or “fly-by-night companies”.
- This is why we recommend sticking with a local roofing.
- So when compiling your list of roofer candidates, you can make sure they are local by including your city name in the Google search (eg: “roofing contractor olathe ks” or “roof storm damage kansas city”).
GOAL AT THIS POINT => Create a list of 7 to 10 roofing contractors.
3. Check their Online Reviews
- Once you’ve got your list of roofer candidates from recommendations and local roofing companies you’ve found online, the next step is to assess each roofer’s reputation using their online reviews.
- Put your candidates in a spreadsheet for analysis of their reviews. When it comes to online reviews, both quantity and quality are factors to consider.
- The quantity of reviews can indicate their experience and how long they’ve been in business.
- We recommend a minimum of 50 reviews.
- The quality of their reviews is measured by the number of stars earned. We recommend only working with roofing companies that have an average of 4 out of 5 stars or higher.
4. Research Better Business Bureau (BBB) ratings
- In addition to checking the quantity and quality of reviews of each roofer on websites like Google, Yelp and even Facebook, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) should be the next stop on your checklist of confirming you’re hiring a roofer you can trust.
- Eliminate any candidates with anything less than an A rating from the BBB.
5. Check Websites of Roofer Candidates
- Next give a quick check to confirm each roofing contractor on your list has a website.
- You can immediately disqualify any roofer that doesn’t have a website. The website will also confirm he provides the specific roofing services you need.
- Lastly, this is how you can get the roofer’s phone number.
6. Check for a License
- Make sure you ask a potential roofing company if they are licensed and if you can see a copy of their license.
- Unlicensed roofers may not have the experience or skill-set required to provide you with a quality roof replacement or roof repair.
- Plus most states require roofing companies to have a license so you should eliminate any roofer without a license.
7. Check for Insurance
- Before you hire any contractor for any job, it’s always a good idea to double check to see if they have insurance that is up to date and covers them for the work that you are hiring them to do.
- If your roofing company doesn’t have the proper insurance for all of their subcontractors and employees, the legal and financial burden can fall on you.
- Eliminate any roofers that don’t have insurance.
8. Make sure they have a Warranty
- If the company you hire makes a mistake while installing your new roof then you’ll feel much better knowing their work is covered by a warranty.
- A reputable roofer will guarantee that they provide the best work possible and offer a warranty if their workmanship doesn’t hold up.
- Eliminate any roofer who doesn’t offer a manufacturer’s warranty as your installer.
GOAL AT THIS POINT => Your list should be down to 2 or 3 roofers.
9. Check Certifications & Training
- If the roofing company you are considering satisfies all of the criteria on this list then you want to check their training and/or certifications as a final thing to consider.
- Ask the roofer you are considering for your project what training they have been through and what certifications they have earned.
- Most shingles manufacturers offer specific product training to their installers to ensure proper installation.
10. Watch Out for High-Pressure Sales Tactics
- Many roofers use high-pressure sales tactics to unfairly pressure their customers into making quick decisions before they’ve had a chance to evaluate all of their options. This is a bad sign.
- Eliminate any roofing company who attempts to trick you into moving forward before you’ve had all of your questions answered.
- A trustworthy roofing company will take the time to explain all of your options so that you can make an informed decision.
- This is what True Grit Construction does every single day.
